From Student to Teacher

In South Jamaica, Queens, Ms. Poe’s journey from student to teacher at P.S. 40Q exemplifies the power of community-driven education. Growing up in public housing as one of fifteen siblings, Ms. Poe nurtured her dream of becoming an educator from a young age.

Returning to Serve

After years of experience in early childhood education, Ms. Poe returned to teach at her former school, P.S. 40Q. “There was no other school where I wanted to be but [the one] where I was from,” she explains. Her commitment extends beyond the classroom, as she builds rapport with families through everyday community interactions.

“Building rapport with families happens through these real-life situations. They understand that you sincerely want the best for their children. Teachers must build trust and bonds to have successful partnerships with their families. Families must know it’s real!”

Partnering for Success

P.S. 40Q’s partnership with Springboard Collaborative has amplified Ms. Poe’s impact. This program, focused on improving literacy rates in underserved communities, has shown remarkable results. In 2023, participating students more than doubled their expected reading growth after just one session.

Engaging Families

The program’s success is largely due to its emphasis on family engagement. While the national average for parent meeting attendance in public schools is 4.6%, Springboard Collaborative’s workshops at P.S. 40Q boast an 85% attendance rate.

Personal and Professional Growth

Ms. Poe’s involvement with Springboard Collaborative since 2020 has enhanced her teaching skills and even benefited her own child, who participates in the program. As she prepares to become a Program Leader, her journey comes full circle.
